Why do broke people keep having kids that they can't afford to take care of at all?

Hi all! I work with this guy who's 22 years old and he makes $10.00 per hour, which is no money in the US today in my opinion. Still, he's married to an obese wife that doesn't work and she's about to have their first baby within the next month but he keeps saying how he has to find another full-time job because the trailer home (lol) that him, his wife, and some other on welfare relatives live in is about to get foreclosed on. hahaha! He also says how him and his wife want to almost immediately work on baby #2 after they have baby #1. In my opinion, this guy has a lot of problems and issues that could've been completely avoided with proper planning in advance. He's 22 years old (a kid in my opinion), obese, has some medical problems, doesn't exercise, eats unhealthy, and he definitely has a low paying job. He's got some education under his belt and does work but I think it's sad how he's putting himself in more unnecessary debt and unnecessary misery by doing these kinds of preventable things. I like working with this guy but I can't help but I can't help but think how dumb, uneducated, and immature he is. So, in short, here is my question. Why do broke people keep having kids that they can't afford to take care of at all? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Because they get more federal assistance for the kids (up until 3, then I think there's a downscale). They're probably working at just beneath the cutoff point which makes their lives comfortable (with federal assistance). Heck, could you imagine having a free card of say $600 a month to go buy whatever groceries you want? ALL of your medical expenses covered without having to pay a dime?  I'd be willing to bet he also has all of the "luxuries" such as cable tv or broadband internet because the money most of us spend for groceries/utilities/mortgage is already covered thanks to our hardworking money.

because a lot of people get help from the government and get a free ticket without caring about tax payers. they get more food stamps and assistance with other things whenever they have children. people are retarded and selfish!

If broke people want to keep having kids that's fine, as long as they can show them love.  It's really better than a crackhead having a child and leaving it alone all night while they are off getting high. You know he's not really complaining to you, he just thinks that he has a friend that he can express his opinion to.

To say WELFARE is stupid because I have never heard of WELFARE completely supporting the child or equivalent of what a second job would bring in. PERIOD.

Wanting to get it done and over with and learn to work from there, likely.

No one is EVER fully able to just have a kid and live comfortably. I take that back. MOST PEOPLE aren't.

I trioed to get socialized help when I was younger and was flat out told to have a child and it wouldn't be a problem.

Since then I have learned that socialized programs are nothing to encourage people to worry about themselves and their futures.

Then I was lead to think of our government and if I was willing to work as hard as I could for 10-11$ an hour and support people who couldn't support themselves. My answer was no. If you disagree with me look up what your political party is.. you might be surprised.

So ppl aren't having kids to get more socialized money.. they are doing it for another reason.

because we have stupid restrictions that prevent people from 1) getting a good s*x education in many schools, 2) keeps people from getting birth control in many states 3) prevents doctors and hospitals from offering a full range of options if they want federal funding....in other words, there are some rich people who seem to want to breed a servant class for themselves while they hoard the good stuff.

Meanwhile, those that are NOT rich and power hungry will just try to find happiness in only love without realiizing all the stress they are bringing upon their lives.

No one one food stamps is happy with their budget and one more kid doesn't give you enough more to even feed that one kid so that arguement makes no sense.

Based on sociology courses which I have taken, and inservice workshops I have been subjected to as a teacher, I believe that the theory is that the poor see children almost as assets.  Especially in third world countries, people are sadly aware of mortality rates, so the more children they have, the more chance they will survive.  They also rely on children to help to work on the farm, raise money for the family, etc.  Finally, they have little other chance of achieving, or hope for the future, so breeding is a big accomplishment.  Having been born into poverty, I think my parents honestly thought they would be able to provide for their children and then circumstances changed.  I suppose some people figure they will be poor whether they have children or not, so what is the difference?  Or maybe they feel the rich are not the only ones with the right to have children?  Maybe they think having children will make them happy?  Or maybe, due to religious indoctrination, they feel it is their duty to procreate?

Because they know that the rest of us will have to help them with our tax dollars. Shut that off, and let us see how many children would be born to people who are irresponsible. It is selfish of them because it leaves the rest of us to struggle to support ourselves and our own families.
