Aren't cars aerodynamic enough for them to be swept up and over the windshield by the air current? Whenever I see wind tests with smoke, the path of air curves neatly over the windshield. I've had other debris (lighter than rocks) fly towards me and pass safely above me. And if you drive quickly on a snowy day, all of the snow avoids sticking to the glass. Why don't bugs get swept up in the current and safely away from a gooey demise?
