  1. Bulls fight for dominance over the herd because the dominant bull is the one that gets to mate with the females.  This is not a waste because fighting ensures that only the strongest bull (the winner of the fight) gets to mate with the females.  This means that the strongest bull's genes (which are supposed to be superior to the weaker bull's genes) are passed to the its babies.  So, with each generation of babies, they should continue to get stronger.


  2. Dominance. With many species of animals the most dominant male is the one who gets to mate with the females. In many cases the dominant male will mate with ten or twenty females while other males might not even get one.
