Why do businesses get to water their lawns?

Now, why is it that during a drought season, residents are targeted? I see government buildings, universities and corporate office buildings with acres of grass being watered at noon. Why are they so important.

  1. the government makes the rules, so they can do whatever they want.  Universities are essentially government bodies - at least public ones are.  And if someone who's a prospective student visits a university covered with dead grass, they will decide to attend a different one.

Same with a business which has a dying lawn.  Customers might think that their products or workers are half-dead, neglected things.  See how it works?

  2. The idea of a mowed green grass lawn is a modern invention, an imitation of the ways of the rich in the 18th century. We don't need and can't environmentally afford these lawns anymore. I applaud those who use a mixture of native plants, which need no watering or mowing ,but which supply an appreciation of nature and maybe a little carbon dioxide/oxygen exchange in their yards. Grassy lawns like SUVs should be discouraged and disdained.

  3. Most businesses in my area build water retention ponds that they pump water out of to irrigate their lawns.

Universities are a different story.  They often have deals with the water companies and can use as much as they want.  It's unfair, but your taxes pay for them to exist, so getting ripped off is par for the course.

Yeah, I've seen the sprinklers running in the rain.  That's just plain ridiculous.  If they're automatic sprinklers they only need a rain sensor to turn them off when it's wet out.  It's a waste of electricity if they store the water and a waste of water if they don't.

  4. Like i keep telling everyone the rich can do as they please when the every day person cant . It will be the rich that survives in the end the command man is going to be told not asked but told to give up everything . Just another sign of the times

  5. usually any business that waters its lawn during a drought has its own well or has a large pond.

so it does not effect the water supply

  6. because govt employees, especially the ones in charge are clueless to how the real world operates. I always find it amazing that these are supposedly educated people yet they are very ignorant. My neighbor insists on watering her yard which is about 4000 sq. ft. her bill was 182.00 last month and she used 68000 gallons of water. What a waste!
