  1. Modern Captains do NOT stay on their ships to die!!!

But if you mean "stay on until everyone else is off" then yes, that is required by the International Captains licenses - the crew is completely your responsibility (one you implicitly accept to get your license) - if you are found failing to ensure the safety of YOUR crew then you will have your Captains licenses revoked.

  2. I think the idea is that eveyone gets off the ship before the captain.

Wasn't the Titanic short on life boats???

  3. In the gooood old days.  there usually weren't enough life boats to go around.  You can blame the designers for that.  They thought that "Thier ships" either couldnt be sunk or wouldnt sink in their lifetimes.

suffice to say, the protocol was that women and children were loaded first , then crew, then officers.  since there wern't enough boats,,,,usually that meant the officers would jump overboard and hang onto the sides of the lifeboats.

Now in waters that were either too cold or infested with "fish"  that didn't leave much chance for the gallant officers, including the captain.  But honor and protocol being the mainstay of the maritimes, thats what happened.
