  1. Because city driving involves a lot of short driving broken by by starts and stops for stop signs, traffic lights, etc. Each stop means that the energy used to get the car moving is lost as you brake.

  2. the revs going up and down from starting and stopping wastes fuel. lower gears (1st and 2nd) are very inefficient.

when on a motorway (highway) :) the constant (fairly) low revs in say, 5th gear keep the fuel burning more efficiently and 'stable'. going at speed in 5th is alot of the time using as little fuel as when idling.

  3. On the highway there is a steady speed at a low rpm, while in the city, you are accelerating, braking, accelerating, etc. and the engine operates at higher rpms when accelerating.

  4. i support mr. goodkard

  5. Transmission in a higher gear, means less engine work, highway, staying more at a steady speed

  6. less chance of stopping on the highway.

    more congestion in the cities

  7. You come to more stops in the city, which wastes gas.
