  3. No one is EXACTLY sure, but we all know that cats purr when they're happy, content, experiencing something pleasurable.

    Did you know that they may also purr when anxious, afraid or in pain?  This is also true, even though no one knows exactly why that is.

    Just enjoy your purring cat, and hope that the purr doesn't signify something painful.

  4. It is their way of telling you that they love you and love that you are petting them.  It is a communication system of sorts, but it is also thought to be a "cat's mantra" similar to Ommmmm, a meditation sound.  

    Some think cats purr when they have babies to let their kittens (who are born blind and deaf) where their mother is (by way of purrrrr vibration).  And in response, tiny kittens will purr back.

    Sometimes cats purr when they are under distress too -- it is a calming mechanism.

    It is a cat's own Zen.
