Question:

Why do cats take dust baths?

Many of my cats roll in the dirt around my house, and have for years, and iv seen many other cats do this too. Iv looked online and can't find a reason. They don't p**p or pee where they roll, its just a dusty spot in my yard where they will roll for awhile. I'm just curious why they do this.

  1. Cats originate from the desert, it is probably something they have kept in their nature. My cats do the same.

  2. For probably the same reason that they roll around on the oil spot in the driveway like it's some sort of religious experience.

Our cat likes to roll around in the bark mulch in our backyard...and then try to get back into the house when she's covered in the stuff. I think it's because they can't scratch their backs but then, what do I know?

Hey, if you ever find out why, let us know!

  3. The dirt helps bind the oil in the fur, and makes them feel cleanier.  It also may be because they have fleas or ticks, and this is the only way they can reach the "itch".
