Your cells need energy to carry out metabolical functions. Every force of movement that is against a consentration gradient(against diffusion or osmosis) requires energy as well. They recieve this energy by producing a small molecule called ATP(adenosine triphosphate). This molecule is the common energy currency within the body. When the third phosphorous molecule detaches from the second, the product is Adenosine diphosphate and one phosphate, and the energy that is released by the breaking of these bonds is absorbed by energy consuming processes.

ATP is made by the mitochondria in your cells from glucose and oxygen, producing ATP and water.

Plant cells have mitochondria for cellular respiration when photsynthesis is not functioning. Though photosynthesis produces some ATP(1), it consumes ATP energy to make sugar and oxygen from water and carbon dioxide.

A cell needs energy to perform its functions, just like why we need energy as people. We need energy to function, otherwise we're just sleepy and do nothing.

Cells perform a process called cellular respiration, where the cell takes glucose molecules and converts it into a usable form , called ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate). This ATP is like the dollar - it's the cell's form of usable energy. The cell needs glucose and oxygen in order to complete the process and produce 32-36 molecules of ATP.

There are 3 parts to cellular respiration: glycolysis,  the Krebs cycle, and the Electron Transport Chain. Details of these processes can be researched, if you would like.
