Question:

Why do children like to hover/congregate around adults whenever we're sitting?

I teach second grade. Whenever I am sitting down in a chair or on the floor, the kids seem to come out of nowhere and they hover really hard.

Like I was checking my email during dismissal and one student came to talk to me and before I knew it, there was a crowd of like seven students standing around me.

It makes me feel boxed in when they do that. And then they all start trying to talk at one time. I know they're young, but geez!

I'm only one person!

  1. You might be in the wrong profession if all those kids make you feel boxed in and uncomfortable...

  2. b/c they are kids and they are curious. I have 3 and they always have to be on my lap or all over me

  3. you should know by now.... when children are involved there is no suck thing as personal space

  4. they are curious...

    and they feel more secure...

also... like it or not you're their surrogate parents for that time.

Respectfully?   I think the problem is with you.   I think there may be stuff in your email,  that may be personal or inappropriate, which means you have to guard it.   You may also be looking for some "down time"... which is understandable, but heck, you're a teacher you're sorta always "on the clock".

Should you, for example BE DOING YAHOO ANSWER, rather than keeping a watchful eye?   Probably not.

  5. Wow, you must be a great teacher, with all that patience.

    They are kids!

  6. because they want your attention?

  7. New rule... one student at a time talking to Miss ____.

I have a second grader too, kids are nosy!

They think they're going to miss something.

When I was a kid, my dad...If I even looked like I was getting close to being nosy... "Stay out of grown folks business!", and that is exactly what I tell my kids.

And you're being nice about it, but some of those kids smell, especially if it's the end of the day.
