Why do children walk on their toes?

my friends daughter has a habit of walking on the toe part of her feet instead of her whole foot. but when she wears shoes she walks with her whole foot. is this a problem?

  2. The medical term is "unguinating" and children do it to strengthen their lower legs to improve balance and running ability.  It is natural for the first few years of life.  After that it becomes a habit.
