  1. When my cocatiel  isscarred or exited he  raise his crest so that would in the wild  worn the others in the flock that there may be danger.

And the bright cheeks are males and dull cheeks are females so cheeks are there to find a mate.

  2. it is actually called a crest.

Wild cockatiels back then used to use the crest to indicate other cockatiels that there is danger nearby. When the crest raises up, usually the flocks of birds begin to fly knowing there is a predator nearby.

Not really to scare enemies but just to let others now how it is.

If your notice, a scared cockatiel will raise their crest extremely straight.

The cheekpatches are just a coincidence in mutation. Just like any odd colored bird, it was just meant to be. there is really no use or reason why they have they patch.  But I would guess it is just for decoration.

  3. Well, thats part of their nature. The "crown" os called a crest. When It is sticking up, its likly that your bird is frightend or uncomfortable. When its down, its calm and relaxed. Their colorful cheeks is just apart of them. What beautiful birds.

  4. Actually both questions have the same answer.

    s*x.

The crown and spots are part of mating displays. The bigger fuller and more impressive the crown/spots the more likely they will get to mate.

  5. As everyone said it's called a crest.

The cockatiel is basically a minature cockatoo & cockatoos display their crests for various reasons. Cockatiels usually display their crest out of alertness. When they see danger their crest goes staright up.

If your tiels crest in down very flat then it is eitehr angry or happy. These 2 are usually easy to tell apart from other indications the tiel gives as well.

The orange patchy cheeks in a male is a show off thing to attract females during mating season in the wild but because there are now so many mutations thanks to us, their is very little cause for cheek patches other than decoration.
