Why do commmentators always point out how far ahead or behind a team is in the "loss column?"?

  1. It's because you can't make up losses.  Like if you are 1 game behind in the loss column but 3 games ahead in the win column. you'd be 1 full game ahead of the team behind you.  Possible records:

    you 86 76

    them 83 75

    If they win all their games (the four remaining games they have but you don't) you can't do anything about it.  So it's really the loss column that matters.
