Why do companies such as mounain dew have contests to win stuff?

are they doing it to sell my information? i haven't fully read their terms and aggreement, but do they usually use it to sell me ads or to send advertisement to my house or what? or is it to sell drinks? btw i didn't win.

YES.  To encourage you to buy the product, use the product and talk about the product and contest to others.

Its a combination of reasons. They sell the information, use it for statistics, get a tax break on give aways, and keep people comming back to their products.
