Question:

Why do cops follow for so long?

I was in a huge hurry yesterday and I rolled a stop on the way to work and it wasn't 'til I was past the intersection that I saw the patrol car and I realized I was screwed. But then the guy follows me for like three blocks before he flashed his lights to pull me over. Why do they do that? Are they so power obsessed that they like seeing us sweat? Is it standard operating procedure?

  1. we never know.  I am retired law enforcement.  Had a patrolman follow me 50 miles once and pass and wave

  2. he was runnin your tag, relax bro.

  3. For me, the severity of the infraction determines. If someone does a minor infraction I will check their criminal/dmv history 1st. If they have been clean for the past few years will let it slide. Also if you are pulling over someone with a history of violence.......The more info the better.

  4. He was probably running your plates.

  5. It really depends on a lot of things.  I know a lot of officers who will try to check the license number of the vehicle, either via radio or in-car computer, and try to get the information before making the stop.  They may also be looking for a location that will provide the best available environment to conduct the stop.

Now, me, for example, if I observe a relatively minor violation, I may follow the car for a bit to see how they continue to drive, and observe the behavior of the driver/occupants so as to determine whether on not to make the stop or let it go.

  6. It's probably standard operating procedure.

  7. He was probably checking on whether or not you were driving a stolen car or had stolen tags.
