I own a Beretta and its great and I know that Beretta is the standard issue for military and a lot of police officers so why do so many cops use Glocks? I know Glock is a good gun too but what advantages over a Beretta does it have? It seems to me like cops would trust the same gun the military does. Don't get me wrong I know both Beretta and Glock are good guns and quite possible the two best, but I was just wondering why so many cops like Glocks.

  1. It's not a matter of Officers liking them. It's an issue of what some Officers are issued and what some Officers and Departments can afford. I carry a model 27 for off-duty use but I'd prefer a Kimber and Springfield Armory .45ACPs for duty use.

There are many advantages to a Glock, easy disassembly, cleaning, durability and simplicity. The decision for the U.S. Military to carry Berettas wasn't really a popular one to begin with. Many people didn't like the fact that Beretta was an Italian company. Others questioned why we needed to go to a smaller pistol caliber.  Me personally, I liked the .45ACP I was issued. It could take a h**l of a lot of abuse and was still accurate.

  2. I've fired and carried a few weapons. Beretta, (2) Sigs, H&K, S&W, Ruger, Colts, and Glocks. Probably more I can't think of.

I prefer the Glock over them all.  Feels good in my hand, shoots good and my Glock 21 holds 17rds of .45 with extended mags. Haven't had a jam in thousands and thousands of rounds.

I did like the Beretta I carried when I was in the military. Its a good gun and very easy to get good with.  BTW, don't base anything on what the miltary issues. After all, Beretta was the lowest bidder ; )

  3. The 40cal. has better stopping power than the 9mm. Just ask the FBI, they unfortunately found that out in Miami during the 80's. The first issued gun I had is the one I wish I still had. S&W 4043 DAO in stainless. Very accurate and simple to shoot. Trigger pull was very manageable, for me at least. My biggest gripe with the Glock is this. If I pulled my S&W with my eyes closed, the gun would point straight ahead. I pull my Glock and it sits muzzle pointing up and you have to turn your wrist down to aim. I hate that. It may seem petty too many, but I want a gun that seems to "know" what I want it to do.

  4. Glock has no externally manipulable safety to malfunction, Early berrettas had some issues with slide fracture from what I remember.also I have heard the glock is far more tolerant of abuse and neglect, departments often get group purchase discounts. also if the department gets a model 18 (full auto version) then there is a surplus of magazines

  5. My preference is the S&W 40 model 4047.   In testing it was also found that it has more knockdown power than a 9 yet is easier for a smaller officer such as females to use than the 10.  Tests showed more accuracy and truer shots.  A lot of times it depends on the preference of the person in the department that decides what specks they want or what weapon a dealer gives the department a good deal on.  Same as patrol cars, money often decides whether this years models are Ford, Dodge or Chevy.

  6. I would not carry a Gock if you paid me! Do not like them. I have no respect for them at all. They are lousy in very cold weather. Some have been known to beak when they have been fired in 20deg F and below. I have been using a Beretta since 1990. Has save me many times. Before that used (still trade off) my S&W 64 4".

  7. Because Glocks are really good guns for their price.  Besides, the Beretta, as nice as it is, is only a 9mm, and many departments and officers prefer a 40 caliber for its better stopping power.

Personally I prefer Sigs, but they are pretty pricey and not economical to issue to whole departments although some do.  Keep in mind that Police Departments have budgets to worry about.

  8. the reason is that glock r much easier to clean and can with stand lots of abuse and still will fire berettas on the other had are nice guns but need cleaning every day even though its in the houlster and all

  9. I don't know, maybe it's just in your area.  Where I worked we were given a list of approved weapons, and Glock wasn't one of them.  We had to purchase our own.  I carried a S&W 4506.

  10. I use a Glock because that's what I was issued.  I can't choose what I carry on duty.  It would not be my first choice, but I don't hate it.

  11. In my opinion Glocks are more durable.

  12. I personally prefer Sigs. However, most cops prefer Glocks because they hold a LOT more rounds than their counterparts, are inexpensive and extremely durable. I have shot Berettas, Glocks, H&Ks, and Sigs and I prefer the Sig because the handgrip is slimmer than a Glock's (I have small hands) and I feel that the shot is "smoother." However, I wish that Sig could hold a few more rounds (I carry the .45 version) like the Glock but then the handgrip, again, would be too wide. I carry a Glock for concealed carry, it's a .45 and I love it. I was in the military and shot the Beretta. I always thought it was kind of a crappy gun. I never liked shooting it, and I also learned that just because the military has it (especially ours) its not the best. Remember the lowest bidder gets the contract.

  13. Because the police departments get them for a reasonable price.
