  1. as a source of pride in country, sense of history, sense of belonging to a group and identity.

flags were often a battle sign/signal as a rallying point, encourager, and way of communications

  2. having a flag is like the coolest thing in the world. Before there were wars, in order to solve a dispute a quick game of Capture the Flag would definitely show who the argument should favor.

  3. Is it cause they used them to surrender.

  4. Whether grouped by tribe or by religion, people have always seemed to come up with symbols of themselves or their beliefs. (Cross, Star of David, Crescent, e.g.) No doubt visible symbols served a practical purpose in warfare -Coats of Arms, regimental colours, etc.. After a long period of evolution, those countries which didn't have flags or didn't even exist, adopted flags because other countries had them.

  5. In the days before modern communications techniques like radio, flags were a way of communicating over long distances - that is as far as the eye could reasonably see. The Romans used them to signal between forts on Hadrian's Wall, and at sea they were used as a means of ships talking to each other. At sea ships could come from anywhere and it was particularly important that they could tell each other apart - friend from foe - from a distance, so flags became a way of demonstrating nationalty/allegiance. This also applied in battle, enabling figters to tell where their friends were.  In this way, each country came to have its own, distinctive flag.

  6. I actually have no idea, but my guess was in earlier years colonies wanted their own symbol, instead of writing 'The British Colony' they could put their flag. Dont quote me on that, I am not sure

  7. Flags were used to identify groups of people from other groups of people. They were also used as a way to rally people together.

During times of war, flag carriers in battle were frequently targeted by the enemy in order to demoralize the troops. When a flag carrier fell, someone else would pick up the flag to encourage the soldiers to continue the attack.

  8. Before there were countries there were tribes that were a sort of family and I suppose it's like a family crest. Also it showed what side people were on if they went to war. I'm not an expert.
