Why do credit card applications ask for the nearest relative?

just curious cause I don't want them getting any junk mail or having to be responsible for my debt if I die or something.

So that if you renege on your debt...and you are still alive...they can get in touch with you - or send the Collectors after you.

They want to be able to collect on your debt. Some people move etc and a relative will usually know how to contact you.  The relative will be not responsible for your debt.
