I have two diamond rings, one of them is 1/5 of a carat and shines alot, the other one is 1/2 caract and is opaque. I cant decide which one to give to my girlfriend as an engagement ring. Also I want to know why one is less bright than the other one.

  1. rather than collect enagement rings from others go to the store and get her one that is HER OWN if she is that important enough to marry.

  2. diamond brightness is determined by the colour, clarity and cut.

clearer diamonds (a D is clearer than an F) allow more light in to reflect back from the facets at the back of the diamond.

Clarity (how many defects are inside the diamond) also stop light from reflecting around inside. The type of cut also determines how much light is refracted/reflected back out the top and sides. a "brilliant" cut diamond reflects a lot of the light back up and out, which makes it "sparkle" more.

  3. The better the diamond the less colour. I should be very clear and sparkly right through. If you see lots of different colours or even 2 it is a cubic zircon (fake diamond). There are stores who rip guys off big time if they don't know how to find a correct diamond: colour, clarity, cut.

  4. Depends on the color, cut and clarity of the diamond.  All diamonds are rated this way.  You should talk to the jeweler where you bought it and ask them about it.

  5. Diamonds are categorized by cut clarity and color on a scale.  No 2 diamonds are alike.  There is also a color range for diamonds from clear to yellow and anything in between.

You probably have two different types of diamonds.  Give her the one that you think is prettiest.  I would go with the brighter one!

  6. Diamonds sparkle because light enters the diamond then bounces back off the back of it by hitting the facets (how the diamond is cut).  If your diamond has poor coloring that keeps it from being clear then less light will be able to get in.  If there are specks of stuff (called inclusions) in the diamond then the light will hit them and bounce back to her hand rather than to the eye and it will appear less "sparkly" as well.

Cut lets you know how well the facets are placed so the light can bounce off it.

Color lets you know how clear the diamond is and how much light can get in.

Clarity is how many of the inclusions are in the diamond.

All three of these are important in determining sparkle.  Since you can't really return either of the diamonds I would just give her both I suppose, or just have a friend/family memeber try to find out if she is a size queen or a quality queen.  Some women would rather have the larger diamond that sparkles a little less, others insist on having a perfect stone even if it means they get a smaller one.  If she is unhappy with both I guess she could trade them in towards a single engagement ring.  If she picks one you can turn the other into a pendant or something for her to wear on wedding day.

  7. Diamonds are of different color, cut, clarity and carat.  The better these qualities, the brighter the diamond.  I say, look for color and clarity.

Give your girlfriend the smaller, higher quality one.  It will sparkle more which brings more attention to it.

My husband gave me a small, perfect diamond because he says I'm small and perfect...and I thought it was the sweetest thing.
