Why do doctor's do this during a check up?

Whenever I take my baby in for a check up, why do the docs push her knees up to her belly and spread them apart? What are they testing for? Just curious!

  7. They're testing for a condition where the baby's hips are not located properly at birth - if this happens, when they do that movement they will feel a "click" as the joint moves.

    It's important that it's identified early, because the older the child gets the harder it is to fix, and they won't learn to walk if it's left untreated.

  10. Babies sometimes have 'clicky hips' where the top of the thigh bone pops out of joint in the pelvis. Its not a major problem and can be fixed by wearing hip braces for a few weeks.
