They don't. My cat and dog got along just fine, most dogs want to play and some cats (*depending upon personality*) don't want to play so the dogs mess with them until the cat hisses and runs away, then the dog gets excited and chases them barking. Making it appear that "dogs hate cats" Its untrue, but most people think that. Share the news with them!!!

it depends on the animals temperament mostly.  we have 3 dogs and several cats (we live on a farm).  1 dog only attacks the cats if they attack first or if shes trying to get food.  another tries to get them to play with her by "flushing" at them (shes half pointer) and the 3rd couldnt care less.

only some dogs do, and usually it just a territory thing. other dogs just want to play with them.

My dog loves my cat all he wants to be is play ! My cat hates my dog it is usually a Territorial thing cause we had our cat then got our dog so if you get them at the same time they will probable love each other!

I have one dog and three cats, and the dog likes the cats just fine. He is especially good friends with one particular cat.  

I think more aggressive breeds of dogs will really go after cats because it's just in their nature to go after other animals.  My dog is a golden retriever so he's gentle by nature.

Not all of them do.  It is as others have said; all based on the way the animals were raised.  We have dogs and cats and they all interact just fine.  Two of the dogs we adopted had never been in a home with a cat until they came here; but now both of those dogs are most beloved by several of the cats in the family.

Some have a hunting history.

Which gives them instincts to chase cats such as terriers.

Some terriers hunt small rodents but sometimes would chase a cat for fun, usually dogs would never intend to kill them.
