Question:

Why do dogs howl when music is being played?

Every time the theme music for General Hospital plays, my 10 month old Cocker howls. My mom thinks it's cute and has taped the music to have the dog repeatedly howl. I'm afraid that the music is actually hurting the dogs ears. Who is right?

  1. I THINK that dogs only howl when the music is kind of too loud or high for them or they've had a bad experience with it playing

  2. I have a feeling that you are. Dogs ears are so much more sensitive then ours are. That is why they can hear those high frequency whistle things that humans can't hear. I used to live in a house with 4 dogs that would go nuts every time a cop/ambulance/fire truck went by with it's sirens on. They sounded like they were in pain and sometimes even went and hid further back in the house were it wasn't so loud (for our human ears). Their sense of sound is very sensitive. I would suggest burning the taped music and avoid GH.

  3. The dog isnt upset, hes singing. And unlike any other dog,i relly think beagles howl alot, even when someones at the door, its a loud set of howling going on.

  4. You are right...it hurts the dogs ears, just like sirens...

  5. its either if they like it and want to sing along with the music or it is loud and scratchy and they try to yell with it.

  6. I've never had a dog that howls when music is being played, but I've seen dogs do it.  My opinion is that the music gets the dog's urge to howl active much as hearing other wolves howl would stimulate a wolf's urge to join the others in a group howl.

If the music is not being played louder than you would normally listen to it, it is not hurting your dog's ears.

I knew a dog that would howl along with any live harmonica playing like she was just singin' the blues.  Oh, and my mom had two cockers that would both howl when my mom howled.  Maybe it's a cocker thing...
