Why do domesticated horses need horse shoes and having their teeth floated when wild ones do not?

I know that these are constantly mentioned procedures on the Animal Planet rescue shows but wild ones live without any such care. Even the feral horses of the American west get along without these procedures even though they are descended from domestic stock.

  1. Wild horses spend 80% of their time running/walking over some of the harshest ground there is.  This keeps their feet in good condition.

Stabled/pet horses spend less than 10% of their days even moving.  They stand in one spot.  Being still can be harmful in itself, especially if the horse is standing in wet or poopy stalls.

That goes for teeth too.  They eat wild grasses, scrub and anything they can find which wears the teeth down.

Pets get fed grain.  Out of buckets.  There's no opportunity to wear down the teeth.  Even hay won't completely do the job.

Also, wild horses do suffer these problems.  The difference is...

Life in the wild is brutally harsh.  If they have problems running from predators or keeping up with the herd, they die.

If they can't eat, they die.

  2. because they learn how to live in the wild, and do that for themselves. theyre also not ridden, and dont have a bit in their mouth.

  3. Because people just can't help fiddling with nature.

For very high level performance stuff I agree that horses need the extra support to curb wear on their hooves. But 80% of horses would be better managed with diet and trimming imho.
