Question:

Why do drivers ignore crosswalk signs?

In the past week I have experienced four drivers going through the crosswalk intersection area while the lights are flashing.

I push the button check for close traffic within 10 feet when that has past I begin to walk and more often then not someone else just blasts right through the crosswalk and I am in the middle of the road.

What bothers me the most is that this crosswalk is situated not more than twenty-five feet away from a primary school.

Why are drivers doing this and what can I do?

  1. I don't blast through the crosswalk but if I am turning and there is someone crossing the cross walk if they are just started to cross (on the other side) or in the middle of the cross walk and I have time to go, I will go. If they are right where I am going to cross, I wait til they are in the middle and then go.

Theres nothing you can do really. I think there should be something done if the drivers are speeding right through the crosswalk and someone is walking. Thats not right.

  2. People are always in a hurry and figure since their walking they aren't. It is the law to stop for pedestrians and lots of undercover officers are ticketing drivers for not stoping for pedestrians in my town. The fine isn't pretty either. Request your local police station to set up a similar program especially since it is near a school.
