Why do dwarf hamsters like attacking erasers?

My sister has a couple of dwarf hamsters, and recently she discovered that if she sticks the eraser end of a pencil into their cage they'll go crazy trying to nibble on the eraser. Why is this?

they properly don`t want to be erased.

i let my dwarf hamster in my desk drawer one day and he found one of my beeg erasers and started attacking it.

I think they believe it's a threat/predator.

maybe its the smell or something, lol.

maybe they think its an attacker and are protecting their territory.or maybe they think it is food and are a bit hungry.
