  1. Earth worms have five aortic arches because they lack a true a heart and have an open, not contained in vessels, circulatory system. So to account for the increased resistance caused by system's innate inefficiency the earthworm must apply pressure to its vascular fluids at five consecutive locations to maintain flow.
