Is he really that bad? Can I get an example of why he's called the worst announce ever?

  1. I don't think he's bad at announcing. Some people might dislike him and use that feeling to call him "bad."

He irritates me when he announces. I don't like the way he monopolizes the conversation and speaks as though he's the be-all-end-all of baseball. I can only take so much focus on batting stance, as well.

But that doesn't mean he's a bad announcer. Just one who annoys me.

  2. I think he is ok, I have definitely heard worse. RIP Skip Carey, you will be missed!

    He was really really good!!

  3. He's better than anyone at FOX, but he's not as good as Orel Hershiser.  Morgan is uneven at best.  He has games where he can bring some interesting insight into the game.  But in other games, it seems like the only thing he can say is, "cutter", when explaining the pitch.

Also, I'm a Red Sox fan, and Morgan hates the Red Sox and Boston.  I bet he had a negative experience or 2 during his playing days in Boston.  But again, he's not nearly as the guys on FOX who seem to love the Yankees.  I bet if someone wanted to keep a count during a Red Sox Yankke game, McCarver's Positive Comments about the Yankees would greatly out-number Positive comments about the Red Sox.  Keep in mind that the Red Sox are the defending World Champs and they lead the Yankees by 2.5 games in the AL East - In other words, the Red Sox by virtue of their record are a better team than the Yankees and given that the are the Champs, deserve a little more attention than the Yankees.

  4. Because all he does is make the same point over and over and over again. He is not very original. In his opinion, the best thing any hitter can ever do is move a runner from 2nd to 3rd with less than 2 outs. He brings this up at least 3-4 times a game.

  5. One of the most popular baseball blogs on the internet is named after him, and frequently discusses his failures as a baseball analyst.

The reason why a lot of fans dislike him, beyond his bias and general stupidity, is that he talks a lot but never says anything significant or notable. He's sort of "old school" in the sense that he calls players "gritty" (as if this somehow wins you games, or makes up for a bad OBP). He talks about "clogging the bases". All of these run counter to what modern baseball research has shown is effective, winning baseball.

  6. I've yet to understand this myself.   He's not NEARLY as bad as people try to make him out to be.

  7. This is just my opinion, so of course, you're free to agree or disagree...

The reason I dislike him is because I think he's boring and self promoting. He's biased against certain teams, too. I just don't think it makes for an all around good announcing experience.

  8. It just gets down to style and personal preference.  While it is true that some fans don't like him there are many that do like him.  Every announcers has their fan base and as well has a handful of others that prefer someone else, it comes with the territory.

  9. He's an awful announcer and person.  He didn't want to induct Ryne Sandberg into the Hall of Fame because he wanted to be the best 2nd baseman in the Hall if Fame.  He also had the nerve to say that he thought this years White Sox had the best bullpen ever.  What a retarded comment, especially when you know it's not true.  Seriously, best ever in all of baseball's 100+ year history.  The guys just an idiot and he thinks he's better then everyone, but he's too dumb to notice that everyone hates him.

  10. for someone who is supposed to know the game, he got the balk call all messed up last night. The Balk was called because the pitcher didn't step towards first, not because his non pivot foot went behind the pitchers rubber.

  11. he is not as bad as john miller.  for an ex major league player he should know more about the game and the rules.  i don't think they get a scouting report on the teams they cover as he usually gives out incorrect information and the locals know it.

  12. He's a great announcer/broadcaster, but his analysis are just so weird sometimes. Oh you see, I wouldn't stand that way to face Randy Johnson because my right eye is not as straight toward the left field fence. That was just an invented example, but those are the kind of comments that really irritate people. I'm not going to compare him to Tim McCarver because I kind of like McCarver a little, but it's almost the same sort of thing. They both think they know more about baseball than anybody.

But Jon and Joe have been together for a looooong time and I don't think they will separate anytime soon.

  13. I agree with the person who said it's personal preference. I'm not a big fan of his color commentary, but so what? I also think there's an element of "tear down those who are successful" going on.

Nobody's perfect; everyone makes mistakes. Some folks just seem to revel in being negative and destructive.

  14. He's better than Michael Kay, Tim McCarver or Joe Buck.  Usually I just hit the MUTE button and listen to the radio.

  15. Its just their opinion. Everyone has one.
