  1. Scarecrows were only used for small plots, namely gardens and such.  Today the agriculture business is very different.  Farms are typically hundreds if not thousands of acres in size and a scarecrow is simply lost in the expanse.  They are still used in small gardens but ususally the birds figure out quickly that the scarecrow will do them no harm so they are quickly ineffective. The truth be known, scarecrows were never very effective.

  2. Farming is nonprofitable, so the farmer is still wearing the clothes that they use to put on the scarecrow.

  3. they kept running away to Oz

  4. a friend of mine is the largest wheat farmer in south Texas. near the end of the year his wheat is the only green crop around and it draws in geese like crazy(thats why he grows it-bang, bag ,bang)

however to be a farm the crop has to be sold ad he likes to come out ahead so when noone is going hunting he puts up scarecrows with bright orange flailing plastic arms, and they work.

  5. I wouldn't say that there were no scarecrows used anymore.  You still see one in gardens sometimes.  The fact is, though, that scarecrows don't really do much good at all.  You can fool birds for a day or two but after that they will use a scarecrow for a perch.  We used to use those carbide guns to scare birds from our research  plots.  They would scatter at first, by the second day they would fly off then come right back.  By the third day they would barely flutter.

  6. They are still used but just for decoration only.

  7. They Don't Work !

Crows are intelligent birds and know there is zero danger. If you could hire REAL PEOPLE they might stay away,, but again, if there was NO threat,, they'd still land!

  8. yes they are used-but for decoration purposes. =)

  9. Likely crows can spot them easily from the air.  Crows are now used to people and stand by the side of the road with cars whizzing by at 65 MPH or let you walk by them only 30 feet away.  One farmer caught a rather pesky and noisy crow by leaving out two pounds of baloney.  When he heard the crow he ran out and swatted it with a broom.  Which proves that you should keep your mouth shut when you are full of baloney.

  10. There is no Scarecrows anymore becuase they have chemicals and genetically altered plants.

Land has been cleared for "The Matrix."

Mexico 18% of 108 million in agriculure

    USA 0.7 % of 301 million

    Canada 2% of 33.4 million

overall, about 5% of the north american population is still farming. It has been on a steddy drop.

  11. I think it's because these days a lot of farms are larger and more corporate. In the days when a family owned a small piece of land, it was a good thing for the kids to do, and was effective over a small area. Some farms in Lincolnshire still have them, especially around the little village where I grew up.

  12. I still see a few driving along farmlands but with crows sitting on them, lol. They probably work for the first couple of hours until the crows get braver and move in closer to investigate.

Check out the quote from the website listed below:

"Farmers still use scarecrows all over the world. In countries like India and some Arab nations, old men sit in chairs and throw stones at the birds who try to eat their crops just like the bird scarers of long ago."

    Ha! Sounds like Deliverance.
