does anyone know why flamingos sleep on 1 leg

  1. many, if not all birds sleep on one leg.  I am pretty sure it is a comfort thing because they are on both legs all day and when they sleep they can relax one foot.  

    also, if it is cold, they tuck one foot up in the feathers, and squat down so the belly feathers cover the other foot so both feet can stay warm...

    that last part is different for flamingos.  They just lay down.  


  2. Most all birds sleep on one leg, not just the flamingo.

  3. because if they lifted that one leg, they'd fall down.  

    in reality, though, it's to conserve warmth.  it gives birds an easy way to sleep, often off the ground, but can react quickly to a disturbance or threat.  

  4. It's a bird thang...It's because they are resting that leg.  And did you know that birds (the parrots that eat with their feet) are either lefty's or righty's.  I have two parrots, and one eats with the right foot and the other eats with it's left foot...

  5. Because they can.
