Why do football players wear visors?

What exacly does it help you with? Why do players wear them? I need to know so I can make up my mind if to get a visor for football.

visors are use for light blocking dirt ect. but i have one and most people have one because its looks cool and is intimidating to the other team. people with visors are usually people who are good and make plays. wearing a visor makes you look beat on  the field.
