Having looked at a football game from the 1960's there was no spitting so I rather think it's bad manners.

Why don't rugby players spit? They rarely do and again I think it's up to manners. I've run marathons where you really feel like spitting but you don't. It gives the youngsters the idea that it's good to spit in public...spreading TB and other aerobic bugs.

The reasons given are accurate,but macho is also a feature.Take for example a sub coming on the pitch,he will spit a couple of times as he's coming on.There can be no plhem build up as he's just come on.

What really annoys me is that match of the day show all the spitting close up,and it's edited.It should not be shown
