Why do fried onions give a person gas but raw onions will not?

  2. Because fried onions are fried in oil which tends to give you gas while raw onions are not.

Well, onions themselves actually have a coating which is mildly acidic (low pH level) so when it gets to your stomach during digestion it doesn't react therefore releasing minimal sulfuric gaseous excretions (aka flatulence). The effect altered when the onion is fried as the outer acidic coating is broken down and the endodermis remains which is a more basic (high pH level) and reacts violently with the stomach's acid used in digestion process which emits high amounts of sulfuric excretions hence the increase in gaseous emissions from the body.  Hope this helps!
