Why do geographers study rivers?

I know its important to study rivers for several reasons one example being to understand what going on with the climate ie, are there floods or droughts?

I just cannot think of other reasons..

    Why do archaeologists study fossils?

    Why do mathematicians study numbers?

    Because that is what is geography is all about . . . physical features of the land.
