i actually have really short nails, i don't like them long i think they look kinda disgusting and witch-y.

long nails just seem to look more girly, i'm not sure why.

i can't really keep mine long though, they get in the way of my piano playing!!!

Nature wants us to be able to identify the opposite for mating.

There are smells that is not noticable that helps us identify but as we have come to depend on sight more we depend on visual clues. It may not be the same everywhere but I would think since they are a type of weapon that more often women would be the ones allowed. It does seem like they send a message that the owner is "dangerous" but too long maybe, "hindered."

Long nails have been a discrimination for ugly and unattended nails ni the 1800's.

But suddenly, long nails on girls have been a big fashion statement on girls being flirty and "cool". Nail colors or nail polish also added to this fashion statement on nails. Also, I think theyre good keyboard cleaners (though I dont have long nails).

But, I still prefer short nails. I think theyre clean and they show neatness.

For the boys part, seriously, have you seen a DECENT boy with long nails?

If yes, can you please make sure he really is a guy? (maybe g*y, lol)

It's fashion, but originally meant to show that you didn't have to work  -- as long nails get in the way of doing anything.

I am a girl, I cut my nails short. I find women's fashions to be restrictive and inhibiting: high heel shoes being the worst, long nails second after that.

It comes from an attempt to portray an image of wealth and status. Long fingernails is a sign that a woman has no need to perform manual work, she has others to do that for her. Short fingernails on a man is a masculinity thing for the same reason. A man like to appear active, hand's on, practical, not afraid of a hard days graft.

From a cultural standpoint, it is a display from a woman that shows she is a strong mate. In a competion with other females for beauty, long nails can be a fashion statement and also show the power of wealth. Long nails would tend to show that the female does not have to do manual labor. Also,long nails would show the health of the female making her more desirable for the male.

  For the males within our culture, the long nails are undesirable. Showing a weakness from the standpoint of willingness to play roughsports and exert strong "macho " behavior. Chop wood for example or work on your own car.

It's culture, and long nails universally have a feminine appearance to them.

However, I am increasingly becoming a fan of girls with short nails. I know a lot of hideous women that have long nails and think that their long nails are the holy grail of everything that is "beauty." Nope.
