Why do glass bottles have notches in the bottom?

  1. There are actually 2 reasons. The first is just like others have said; bottling machines. BUT the real reason, and more important, is this:

    If you spill the liquid, the notches help prevent the liquid from creating a seal and slipping all over the place (think of hydroplaning and the tread on your tires).


  2. I think it's to make the bottles more stable and to let them stand upright??

  4. Filling machines can hold them better that way. The cogs, etc hold them still better.

    As a side-effect, they're also maybe more stable, and a little easier for you to grab hold of them sometimes (don't ask how I know, I  just do...I've been in that position).
