And it's not like golfers are playing by themselves. They are playing in front of huge audiences and TV that have witnessed their scores.

  1. You must sign your card because the playing partner keeps your score, you keep his. You check over it to be sure that the correct score has been kept.

Several players have been assessed penalties because the playing partner wrote down the wrong score and the player did not check it properly.

Once again this is for the integrity of the game.

  2. Like baseball and football..........there are rules that are to be followed......It is what it is Man!

  3. It's an old rule from pre-electronic scoring days, and golf is typically a game of history, they don't often change very many rules.

  4. to make sure they dont shave strokes

  5. Their scorecard is the official record and, even though it could be done differently, the rules are that they are responsible for tracking their own score.  So they have to sign it to make it official that they are submitting that score.  Obviously, it would be pretty stupid for them to lie about their score for the reason you said.  Although, probably worth keeping in mind that not all golfers are as popular as Tiger Woods.  There are lots of golfers who probably don't attract much of a following.

  6. Same reason offensive linemen can't handle the football (except the center) and batters have to bat in their proper spot in the batting order...

    Because it's the rule.

    6-6. Scoring in Stroke Play

    • a. Recording Scores

After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker must sign the score card and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each must sign for the part for which he is responsible.

    • b. Signing and Returning Card

After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-6b:

    Disqualification.

Can someone please get that poor girl a rule book??  This isn't the first time she's been disqualified from a tournament for apparently not knowing the rules.

I mean, yeah, it seems kinda silly.... seems that maybe they could have a penalty of a few strokes or something...disqualification is tough, but hey, as long as the rule applies to everyone, it's fine.

  7. That is a rule of golf. Many of the rules are called  by golfers on themselves with no one else seeing. There are penalties for the ball moving when you didn't even hit it... and you call it on yourself.

"The measure of a man is what he does when no one sees him do it."

  8. If someone puts a 4 on their scorecard when they really got a 5, they've cheated. If I kept your score and recorded a 4 but you put down a 3, one of us would have to correct it.

Cheating is not accepted in golf - just another example.

  9. Acutually, a golfer doesn't play in a tournament to be on tv, or be admired by audience members, or even to beat a certain player! a golfer has to beat the golf course.

    as Jack Nickaluas once said

  10. Why didn't someone in the tent remind her to sign the card?

Does no one look at it as it's turned in?

This was a major tournament - not some dollar a hole game between friends.

I think the officials have some explaining to do about why they let her walk away without checking her card.

  11. Yes, but it's tradition.  And not everyone sees every shot of every tournament.  The vast majority of golfers are not in this "public" domain to where all that they do is seen by the masses.  It's a good accountability procedure that's just unnecessary for the dozen or so golfers of the pro tour that every shot of theirs is covered.  As for everyone else......it's a necessary procedure.

  12. Secret Asian man has to familiarize himself with the game of golf, the rules cited by Tweety, and the penalty for not abiding by the rules. As for football players, they have blind referees who see less than half of the infractions and penalize only part of them, and if the game required signatures to vouch for their fair play many would not know where to place the " X ".

  13. Because it's a stupid rule.

  14. It is one of those rules that have been around for a very long time, with t.v. coverage it would be very hard to get the wrong score, but it started out as a way for the golfer to verify that the score is correct. in the 1968 masters roberto devicenzo lost by one stroke to bob goalby because his score on one hole was taken down incorrectly.

  15. It's a stupid rule. Period. Wie shouldn't have been disqualified. Who cares if she didn't sign her scorecard???!!! Who cares even if she wrote down the wrong score?? Everyone knows what her score was so why should she have to be disqualified???? The bleeping tournament is on TV!!!! The fact that she didn't sign her scorecard didn't affect the integrity of the game in any way. This makes no sense!!!!! It's just a stupid archaic rule that is rooted in tradition and nothing more!!!!
