Why do governments of market economies and regional authorities favour competition and resist monopolies

  1. Because more competition means lower prices.

I think that's a history question.  But, I'm sure it has something to do with a large business having a monopoly and taking advantage of the consumers.  On the other hand, competition encourages balance in the market place--fairer prices based on demand and quality.  That might also help a government have more income from taxes--people will buy less if the prices are too high.

  3. Have this in mind, monopolies are like absolute or autocratic rulers. They do all the decisions by themselves; they operate whichever way they want. They see no threat of losing their business.

    Competition is like having democratic leaders (power is represented, the people do the choices). In a competition, a business always tries to outdo other businesses in attracting costumers/buyers. Competition results to lower prices and higher quality of products and services.
