  1. To seperate the rocks from the deckers or mussels.then eat the meat.

  2. They usually aren't rocks, but  mussels and clams.   Got to crack them open before they can eat them.

  3. They are training to take over the world.

  4. They are probably mistaking the rocks for shellfish, which they are hoping will break open and provide a meal. Sea gulls are not that bright this way - even if they get a hold of a shellfish, they don't always check if there's a hard surface below, and will drop it onto things like grass. If they do manage to get a shellfish and drop it on a hard surface, they might still forget about it in the process, and so leave their potential meal for another animal to find.

Crows, on other hand are quite smart - they'll find the shellfish, make sure there is a hard surface below, and make sure they are the ones to eat the 'proceeds'. I've even seen crows put chestnuts under the wheels of parked cars, knowing when the cars pull away, they'll crack the shells in the process.

  5. It's fun?

  6. I have seen them do this with clams on roadways and parking lots to get at the meat of the clams but never with rocks
