Good question, but one that probably has as many answers as there are guys. Me, I enjoy shooting, always have since I was a very young boy growing up in the country. But I also very much respect the amazing engineering and inventiveness that goes into the creation of a fine weapon. A well made gun is as much a work of art as any painting or sculpture. But anyway, the same question could be asked about anything, ... why do some people like jumping out of airplanes, or skiing, or knitting a sweater? Enjoying guns and shooting can be a hobby, ... a sport, ... an escape on an otherwise dull weekend, if anything, I seriously wonder why so many have a problem with it. That itself is irrational.

It's not just guys.My daughter is 20.For her 18th birthday I bought her an AR15.Nothing says "I LOVE YOU" like an assault rifle.For her 21st birthday I'm buying her a KIMBER 1911 in 9mm.Her uncle is paying for her CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT class.That is in january.She will attend the remainder of her CRIMINAL JUSTICE classes ARMED. My GIRLfriend really enjoys shooting 9mm guns.  As far as I know, she's not compensating for anything.  So, the question is... why do you like being sexist?

Go to other sites and ask why people like sports, computers, cars, or travel. everyone has different reasons. I like the challenge of taking a gun to a range, aiming at a target, and seeing how close I can get. I was always too small for football, can't afford the cars I'd like, and will never understand computers, but I understand why people like them. I think of shooting as a sport like golf where your main opponent is yourself, and the challenge is to improve your performance. I also like pitting my ability to hunt game against their ability to avoid me. And the meat you get from hunting tastes extra delicious, just like the fish you catch yourself.

Most of all, though, every time I take a gun into the woods, it reminds me of hunting with my dad when I was a kid. It was our own special time, and he taught me about walking quietly, having patience, and appreciating nature. We didn't shoot anything we didn't eat except predators, and we were always careful to going and out of the woods without leaving a trace behind. He's been gone for almost 30 years now, but I never feel as close to him as I do when I'm out hunting with the rifle or shotgun he left me.

Girls like guns too. I like my guns because they are fun to shoot and also serve useful purposes. I hunt with them to provide food for my family, and they are also a means of self-defense....especially when my husband is deployed.

I have always been fascinated by the concept of guns. especially autoloaders. It's amazing to me that by just pulling the trigger, and feel as the complex process of firing a bullet, pulling the casing out, throwing it a distance from the gun, and loading a new one is done just like that.

I also find it interesting that a tool like a gun creates so much fear, wonder, discussion etc. in the world

Maybe it has something to do with the way we are wired? But really, not all guys like guns, some do, some don't. Why do girls like dolls? Same logic applies. Myself, I like guns, but not all guns. I prefer practical guns as opposed to fully automatic, gaudy looking, slip shod manufactured guns. Revolver or semi-automatic, magazine fed or cylinder, pump, bolt action or break breach. It must go boom. A gun is a tool, just like a good wrench it has a specific job. Self protection, hunting, or sport shooting a gun is a tool that requires training and demands respect. Also do not mix guns and alcohol.
