They think it is cool, it is not. Maybe they are in a gang initiation and think they are being cool, wrong again.

None that i know do. But if they do, it's probably because the mesh in swim trunks gives them rashes, or causes what i call 'scrunching'. That is never plesant!

no. swim trunks have mesh material underneath that makes underwear unnecessary.

also swim trunks (and all swimware) are designed to dry quickly. if you wear anything underneath, it will defeat the point. try wearing a bra underneath a bathing suit and you will understand.

Technically, swim trunks have a mesh liner thus not requiring us males to wear anything since there is a support mechanism.  If you are referring to board shorts, those don't have an inner liner thus some guys choose to wear underwear under those.  I personally think that is a poor choice as wearing wet underwear is gross!  It takes forever to dry and is just nasty.  If I'm going to wear boardies, I wear a brief style suit (speedo) underneath for support.  Since I tend to wear brief style suits regularly anyway for lap swimming, at the pool in my backyard or at the beach, the boardies tend to get dropped anyway before they get wet so I can enjoy swimming and sunning in the speedo.  Brief style sutis/speedos dry quickly and are designed for freedom of motion which means the guys doesn't have wet material clinging to his legs forever after exiting the water.  They are a very practicle suit overall!
