JS, that's not it. When you drink a certain amount of water quickly, you salivate. You want the spit out of your mouth, so you spit it out.

how come they spit in swimming inside the pool?

how come they spit in track and field?

well we can only assume they feel like it.

dont watch it if you cant handle it. they surely wont stop spitting because you think its gross. they wear mouth pieces which produce saliva

People spit all the time. Nobody is going to stop just because you don't like it. The world does not start and stop at your convenience.

When your exercising really hard your spit gets thick and it tastes really nasty.

Because when you exert a lot of energy, your mouth gets all dry and nasty.  So they wash it out with water.  I wouldn't want to swallow that either...

I can only hazard a guess, but when I'm in a cool damp area like a hockey rink and I am exerting myself (skating), I get a bad post-nasal drip and runny nose so I am constantly trying to clear my throat by spitting.
