Why is 3 years-old the magic number? Why not 4 or 5 years-old?

  1. Well i quess it's because 3 years old is a good number because the horse really isn't that old or to young and is ready to get out and race. like 4 would also be the same and 5 but just 3 is the special age! lol

  2. Because it was set up for three year olds at specific distances. There are races set up for older horses too - the majority of the time the lure of breeding means horses that win well are retired at 4 or 5 so don't compete then - many five year olds have their first crop of foals on the ground.

  3. I guess it's a little like kindergarten.  The age of 5 was determined many years ago because it was the age a child could ride a horse and get to school.  Now  kids don't normally ride horses to school but 5 is still the age.  The Triple Crown goes back over 100 years so what was established then remains now.  Two year olds aren't mature enough physically to go the distances of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont but 3 year olds are and why wait an extra year or two?  The magic of the Triple Crown is that none of these horse will have ever run the distances of these races and so the unknown creeps into the excitement of it all.  If the races were for 4 or 5 year olds, there would be the possibility of going one of those distances and some of the mystery removed.

Lots of nice variables for 3 year olds like distance and experience.  And with it just being that one group, you only get one shot at it.

    My 2 cents.

  4. It's a race for 3 year olds.  No other reason.  Different races have different rules.  Some are just for 2 year old, some are for fillies, etc.

  5. The 3 year old season has long been considered the "Classic" season for horses.  Traditionally the best horses would have been retired to stud as soon as possible to pass on their superior genes.  By limiting the classic races (these include the Triple crown) to three year olds only it gives the horses a chance to prove themselves the best of their generation.  It is only in recent years that the trend for keeping colts and fillies in training past 3 years old has taken off.

There are plenty of top class races for older horses and there is a weight for age allowance for three year olds in those races open to 3yo+.
