Why do humans have mammary glands on their chests while most other mammals seem to have them lower?

  1. Other mammals have mammary glands located more forward on the chest, like elephants and marine mammals.


  2. Because we are upright ( most of us) and many other mammals are grounded, so need to be accessed from the ground.

    We hold our babies, not leave them on the floor to feed.

  3. The position is variable among mammals.  With manatees, for example, they're found nearer the shoulders.  The position tends to be in the most convenient location that the baby can reach.
