I am in high school and i am discontent with my life. I can't seem to do anything right. I am a good student but I feel like I don't really matter. I seem to be feeling sad 90% of the time. When I am feeling happy, I am not extremely happy but more content. I am shy and have a hard time socializing with lots of people. I am very worried about germs all the time and wash my hands frequently. I feel like others don't understand me and think lowly of my existence. I am only 16 and I hate my life. I feel worthless compared to everyone else. I need some reassurance that I do matter.

  1. Everyone matters, or they wouldn't have been born.  I spent about 30 years being shy and feeling worthless.  My parents and my first husband did nothing to make me feel good about myself.

Theoretically, you're supposed to feel good about yourself without input from others, but that usually doesn't happen.  It wasn't until I got out into the working world that I started getting positive feedback from my bosses and co-workers.

  2. That's sound's like every teenager i've heard about. Trust me it's just a phase every one goes through it. And that germ thing is just means you're clean, nothing wrong with it. Also you do matter, more then you can ever imagine. Think postive and remind you're self about what i just said when you feel down.  Have good day.

  3. if your feeling this way you may be more like your peers then you can imagine.  In teen years especially most are not as content with their lives.  As you get older you get more comfortable with who you are and learn to only worry what people you love think.  If you are really unhappy and are thinking of anything extreme tell your parents, friends, teachers or anyone you think can get you help.  I can tell you that at your age i was the same way and now i like who i am and for the most part i can be happy knowing that.  Just keep on looking for somthing special, something or someone that helps make you special.

    P.S.  You do matter.

  4. This might be hard to believe, but in today's society where depression is so common that IS how everyone else feels.

I am shy too. So shy in fact that I only made 1 friend in my whole first year of college.

Text book answers to psychological problems are the WORST answers.

You might be a little depressed, but textbook answers to psychological problems are the WORST. you could probably benefit from talking to someone (trusted friend, parent, mentor, counselor, religious leader, etc). You could also benefit from weekly sessions with a therapist (don't worry, everyone has a therapist these days.) Do I think you need to start taking prescription drugs? No.

You are 16, it is TOTALLY normal to feel like that at that age. It may not seem like it to you, but everyone else probably feels just as sad and anxious about their lives as you do. You aren't the only one out there. By my standards, I don't even think you have textbook "depression". Everyone says "depression has been on the rise in teenagers" but thats just because everyone keep taking normal teenage emotions (like what you are feeling) and puts a label on them to make them seem like its a "condition" that needs treatment.

If you want someone to talk to, you can email me lorabore@yahoo.com

I have felt the exact same way in my life, and I still feel like that now, so I know that sometimes the best things is to just have someone, ANYONE to talk to and compare stories to so that you don't feel like the last person on earth with the blues.
