when i ping my pc's ethernet port i get huge amounts of -2ms reports back, generally 15-20 at a time. when i ping my router i get a few -1ms reports, and when i ping my isp's border router port i get a constant 5ms. however, the internet still works fine. im not sure what is causing this, ive never even heard of a ping reporting like that. any help would be appreciated.

  1. usually when you get erroneous pings it's because your not connected properly, so you might be behind a firewall, or on a "anonymous surfing" proxy.....do a quick (Start ~ run ~ cmd ~ ipconfig /release ~ ipconfig /renew, and see if you get a accurate ping then....if you are daisy chaining more then 2 routers you won't get the correct ping no matter how you try it.

  2. Ping: the time needed to reach one port, or one network device, or your ISP.

Pinging your port is - a waste of time. Because it's local and it's on your computer. Of course it would read -2ms.

Pinging your router - it's not local, but it's closer to you than your ISP, and so you got those -1ms.

Pinging your ISP - it's further away from you, and of course the ping request would have to travel through the cables (or the wireless signals) and return to you - in 5ms.

Hopefully I helped. Sure, the internet would work fine, except if pinging returns unwanted results (Destination port unreachable, Timeouts, etc.)
