i run track / xc and i run for about 10 miles or so in my long run (my halfmarathon is 1:32:14 if it helps)

my races are all fine but when i try swimming my stamina seems at an all time low..

its weird i can keep running a long time but i get tired so fast in the pool; i am also a bad swimmer (i can swim but not efficiently)

i have heard swiming is good as cross training too

am i just a bad swimmer and need to work on swimming more?

  1. it is harder to swim than to run. don't be discouraged...

  2. Swimming isn't just about the cardiovascular system, it's an entirely different workout than running, using additional muscles.

More practice will build your endurance with those extra muscles and also smooth out your technique some - at least it will if you pay attention to what kind of movement actually pushes you through the water as opposed to making useless splashes.

  3. Some days i can only swim about 10 or 20 lengths and some days i can swim about 60 lengths.

It's all about how good you feel on the day.

Try using a float until you've got a good technique with your legs.

Slowly build your stamina up it's the only way.

  4. Swimming is a different type of sport.  There is more resistance on your body, and there are different muscles that are used, even in the legs.  Don't be discouraged, it's just a different sort of workout.
