Why do i have the number 1 in front of a phone number when i redial, it says its long distance, but its not!!!

Please help me, i just bought a COBY

model: CD-RA195

i called my home phone from my friends house with his home phone and i told my friend at my house to redial the number i called him with AND IT WONT DO IT?!?!!? we live 1 block away from each other!!!! so its like 1-416-555-5555

HOW DO I MAKE THAT 1 GO AWAY!?!?!???? PLEASE HELP!!! ive bought the same phone 3 times and had the same problem!

  1. just having a 1 in front doesnt make it a long distance call. in my area, we are required to put the 1 and then the area code now because they added a new area code.
