Hi, I'm 42 and have been a pretty heavy drinker most of my adult life. For the last couple of yrs I have had sharp pains under my right-side ribs after drinking. This is where my liver is. I had ultrasound a few years back but all showed normal. My GP thinks I just have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) but it only lasts a couple of days after a drinking bout then stops. Any thoughts?

  1. iam the same a heavy drinker - try taking the herb milk thistle it cleans toxins out of the liver

  2. How about stopping the alcohol?     The liver can regenerate, but full regeneration takes about 7 years.

Other problems caused by heavy drinking are pancreatitis, which is very painful, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and a host of other problems.

I drank heavily for years, but stopped.     For me it wasn't difficult, but some need AA.    At least, for your own sake, cut down.

    Good luck to you.

  3. People on this site would have no more insight than your doctor.  It sounds like it might be your liver.  You should see your doctor and be frank with him about your heavy drinking and the pains associated with it.  Also, do yourself a favor and stop drinking and join AA.  It works.
