Dreams are sometimes hard to understand. Of course they mean what they mean to YOU, and not a general meaning that you can find in a dictionary. I like how you phrased your question, which shows you seem to understand that.

I'd start with what CATS mean in your life. I have often had anxiety ridden dreams about my cats (3 cats). I discovered a connection in that I also have young 3 nieces & nephews, who are often left on their own for long periods of time, even overnight, and they are across the state, where I can't help them much. I feel they are in distress, and my psychologist helped me interpret this whole thing by asking me not to focus only on the CATS but also on the NUMBER, and see if that has any meaning in my life. I would never have thought to look at the number as an important variable. I made the connection after that, not her, and it really was for that stretch of time the meaning of those dreams. I also have anxiety ridden dreams about my cats when my husband and I have a big disagreement about something (oh, yeah--after 21 years it still happens! lol) So, the cats in my life can be a stand in for any number of things over time, but knowing that they are always a symbol for some close connection & deep emotion for me.
