Why do i need an attorney for possession of marijuana?

In May I got arrested for minor in consumption of alcohol, minor in possession of tobacco and possession of marijuana. I'm 17. If I would have been 18 I wouldn't have gotten arrested, just a ticket. I have never been in trouble before (besides one minor in poss. of tobacco last august) I finally got my court date and they said I need an attorney. Why?!? What could they make me do? (fines...probation...comm. service...etc) I live in Kansas.

Because whether or not you agree with the laws you violated, you could get more community service and fines than you really want to pay.  An attorney will give you the best chance at a lower punishment and may find holes in the case that get you off free.  You should have already gotten a lawyer because the case might have been dealt with in the judges chambers.

Well first your under age.

2nd, you had possession of marijuana, which is considered a felony in some states.

You need legal representation in court.

2. you didnt say how much Marijuana you had. coulda been at the felony limit which means you could be charged as a dealer. i think 40 grams and more is a felony. anything below 40 grams is a misdemeanor

Puerto Rico is the only USA posession where simple posession is a felony.  In every other state...posession of a 1/4 oz, first offense is a mideameanor.

You are being charged with crimes!  You need a lawyer to help you with this situation.   You can't afford to make mistakes (representing yourself you will).

Even if you were over 18, you might still have been arrested.  Marijuana is illegal for adults too (by federal law).

Get a lawyer, be tell them everything, listen to their advice ... you might still have to pay some penalties, but it might be easier on you than if you represented yourself.

possession of pot is a felony,duhhhhhhhhhh,but hey you dont need a lawyer,just go to court dressed like the lil street thug you are,light up a bong in front of the dude in the black robe and offer him some.

If the judge has any testicles,he will sentence you to jail,not community service.
